Adapter diagnostics enable you to analyze overall adapter health. When running diagnostics, Intel® PROSet checks for I/O conflicts, memory faults, EEPROM operability, and transmit and receive functionality.
The results of the diagnostic tests appear in the Diagnostic tab.
NOTE: When adapter diagnostics are running, the adapter will not be able to communicate with the network.
To run diagnostics:
Click the Diagnostics tab.
Choose between running only online diagnostic tests or running all tests.
Descriptions of each test are provided in the table below.
To run the tests continuously, select the Repeat tests until clicking Stop button check box.
To run each test once, uncheck the Repeat tests until clicking Stop button check box.
Click Run Tests.
The results appear in the Diagnostics tab.
NOTE: If diagnostics are running and you click Stop, a short delay occurs before diagnostics halt. When diagnostics halt, the OK button becomes available.
| Test | Description |
|---|---|
| Control Registers |
Tests the registers the software uses to configure and send commands to the adapter controller. This test includes all General Registers except the EEPROM Control/Data Register, all Receive Registers, and all Transmit Registers. If the Control Registers test fails, replace the adapter and run the test again. If the test fails with the replacement, this might indicate that the motherboard or another device on the bus is not functioning correctly. This test is available for PRO/1000 adapters. |
| EEPROM |
Reads the EEPROM contents and confirms that the checksum is correct. This uses the EEPROM Control/Data Register which tests the register. If the EEPROM test fails, replace the adapter and run the test again. If the test fails with the replacement, this might indicate that the motherboard or another device on the bus is not functioning correctly. This test is available for PRO/100 and PRO/1000 adapters. |
| Interrupt (irq) |
Uses the Interrupt registers to confirm that all adapter interrupts work properly. If the Interrupt test fails, try changing the interrupt settings in the BIOS. If changing the settings does not correct the problem, try moving the adapter to a different slot. This test is available for PRO/1000 adapters. |
| Mac Loopback |
Tests the adapter's ability to send and receive packets by sending packets to itself. If the Loopback test fails, replace the adapter and run the test again. If the test fails with the replacement, this might indicate that the motherboard or another device on the bus is not functioning correctly. This test is available for PRO/100 and PRO/1000 adapters. |
| Phy Loopback |
Tests the adapter's ability to send and receive packets by sending
packets to itself. If the Loopback test fails, replace the adapter and run the test again. If the test fails with the replacement, this might indicate that the motherboard or another device on the bus is not functioning correctly. This test is available for PRO/100 and PRO/1000 adapters. |
| Link |
Confirms that the adapter is linked to a valid link partner. If the Link test fails, make sure the cable is securely attached to the adapter and to the link partner. If the cable is secure, try attaching the cable to a different port on the link partner or try a different cable. NOTE: When running in conjunction with other tests, the Link test might fail, even though the link is on. To avoid this, run the Link test on its own. This test is available for PRO/100 and PRO/1000 adapters. |
| Self test |
Performs an internal self-test on the hardware. The self-test is comprised of three sub-tests: ROM test, parallel registers test, and serial subsystem test. This test is available for PRO/100 adapters. |
| Other Settings | Run Tests Button: Click to begin testing. This button changes to the Stop button during testing. Repeat tests until clicking Stop button box: Check this box to run tests continuously. |
